Math Expectations for Common Core

Here is a great video clip of an interview on Dewey Gottlieb from the DOE explaining the difference in math expectations that the Common Core has in contrast to the former Hawaii State Standards.

Mililani 'Ike Summer School Enrichment Program
Mililani 'Ike will be having a Summer School Enrichment Program again this year.
Dates: June 12, 2015 - July 2, 2015
Time: 8:00am - 12:00pm
Tuition: $95/per student
Program: Grades K - 2 self-contained class
Grades 3 - 4 rotation of 4 classes: Art, Technology, Public Speaking and Physical Education
Enrollment: Students currently in grades K - 4
Registration Period: April 9, 2015 current Mililani 'Ike students only
April 10, 2015 open registration
Applications will be sent home prior to registration.
There will also be a STEM Camp for students in grades K-4. This is a separate program from our Summer School Enrichment, but will be held at the same time on our campus. Registration information is the same as above, but there are separate applications for each program.
Join us as we delve into the wonderful world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)! Students will engage in several hands-on and minds-on projects to help them better understand the importance of STEM in today’s world. STEM Camp will help students think like scientists and engineers as well as further enhancing their critical thinking and communication skills.Please contact Phyllis Kawamoto @ 305-9560 or Phyllis_kawamoto@notes.k12.hi.us if you have any questions about this option.

Operation Hero
Dear Mililani 'Ike Families,
We'll be offering a second Operation Hero session during the Fourth Quarter for our military families. If you are interested in having your child participate in this after school program or have further questions, please contact Mrs. Oda-Ching at 626-0940 extension 228.
Enrollment is limited and space will be given on a first come first serve basis. Deadline to submit a request for participation in the Operation Hero program is Friday, March 27, 2015.
What is Operation Hero?
- Operation Hero is a program designed to assist military children cope with the challenges of military life.
- Frequent duty station transfers and parent deployments can lead to academic and behavior problems.
- Children are busy adjusting to their family environment that studies sometimes take a back seat.
- Failure to succeed at school directly impacts their self-image and self-esteem.
- Children may experience strong emotions and demonstrate an inability to cope with them.
Spring Session 2015 Schedule:
Week One: March 30th - April 3rd
Week Two: April 6th - 10th
Week Three: April 13th - 17th
Week Four: April 20th - April 24th
Week Five: April 27th - May 1st
Week Six: May 4th - 7th

Music Day 2015
The Mililani Complex will be having a Music Day 2015 on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 1pm - 3pm at Mililani High School. All students in grades K - 5 are invited to join us for a few hours of fun with sessions that include: Band Petting Zoo, Orchestra Petting Zoo, Choral songs and games, Elementary Music activities. Please see the attached flyer and register soon!
Please note that all students MUST have a responsible adult accompanying them. Deadline to register is Friday, April 17!

Parents - If you're struggling with managing your child's difficult behavior, you're not alone! Join other parents in learning more about what makes kids tick and how to bring out the best in them.

National History Day
On Saturday, March 7, 2015, 19 students represented Mililani 'Ike Elementary at the Central District National History Day Competition. The students did an outstanding job by placing in all three events: web page, essay writing and display board presentation.
Thank you to NHD advisors Alison Tanaka, Fumiko Yamada, and Wilene Lum for the countless hours staying after school as well as helping the students prep the night before. In addition, thank you to Cori Muraoka and Bryn Okamura for also staying after school to work with the students.

Jump Rope for Heart and Zumba!
On Wednesday, March 4 we held our annual Jump Rope for Heart event, which supports the American Heart Association.
Students also enjoyed a Zumba session as a reward for meeting last Book Fair's collection goal!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
On Monday, March 2- Read Across America Day- Mililani 'Ike celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday! We enjoyed Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast, parent readers in class and our very own Mrs. Vera Arita shared the writing process with our students in a presentation!
