Thank You Parents!!!
Hello Parents,
Thank you for meeting with us on Monday night to share your ideas in helping our school maintain a safe environment for our students. We can always count on our community to offer their support whenever needed. We appreciate your continuing support and look forward to partnering with you in future endeavors. Thank you for also expressing to Officer Walters from the District 2 Community Police Team your desire for more police presence at our school. As you may have recently noticed, HPD has made their presence known near and on our campus in support of our school and community. Although there is an increase in police presence, we want to reiterate our message that our school is a safe place for our students and staff.

Afternoon Pick Up - After 2:30pm will be at Office
As we continue to work together to keep all students safe at school, we ask for your support. Our students and staff have demonstrated they know the procedures and what to do in times of emergencies. We are proud of the two students who took care of each other by staying in pairs and also immediately notifying a staff member when they witnessed the suspicious vehicle. Our staff is constantly monitoring and aware of activities on campus. Mililani 'Ike Elementary is a safe learning environment.
We are asking for your assistance in picking up your children promptly after school if they are not in our A+ program. Many students are found playing on campus or waiting either in front of our office or at our back gate on Kuaoa Street. We do not have supervision for the students after school. Staff members monitor the pick up locations at the front of our office and the back gate until 2:30pm (1:00pm on Wednesdays).
Please be sure to make arrangements for all children to be picked up by 2:30pm (1:00pm on Wednesdays). Any students remaining unattended at 2:30pm will be escorted to the office and a phone call will be made to parents.
Please speak to your child about the arrangements for after school to be sure everyone is clear on the plan for pick up. If your child is still on campus after 2:30pm please report to the office to pick him/her up. All children who participate in any of our after school groups will be asked to come to the office if they are not picked up promptly.

Vigilance - Student Safety
We are asking for the support of all families and community members. Today at about 12:30pm a suspicious vehicle was observed taking pictures of our office and cafeteria. Two students witnessed the car as it stopped. The driver noticed the two students, drove further up the drive way, opened the driver's door and stood with arms up to the students. The students turned away as a staff member came into the area. The car drove off.
A police report was filed. We are working closely with the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) to investigate this situation. A request was submitted to the Wahiawa patrol division for frequent monitoring of our campus.
In school we have reviewed our procedures to ensure the continued safety of all students and staff. Teachers and counselors will be reviewing safety actions (Stranger Safety) with all students. Students will be reminded never to talk to strangers. If approached by a stranger, run away, yell for help, and make loud noises to get the attention of others (such as yelling, "This is not my Daddy! This is not my Mommy!"). Run to the nearest building or staff member to get help. Tell the staff member what happened.
Please review Stranger Safety tips with your child at home. If you notice any suspicious vehicles or activities, please call the police, 911. We are asking for everyone's cooperation to continue to monitor Mililani 'Ike Elementary and keep it a safe place for all students to learn.

Traffic Safety - Thank you for your Support!
Thank you very much for your support with our request for assistance with the traffic concerns around our school during drop off and pick up times. We noticed a decrease in the number of vehicles that are double parking on Kuaoa Street and creating unsafe situations for our students. In the last week we noticed cars are following traffic rules and posted signs.
Please continue to assist us in keeping all students safe as the arrive and leave our campus. We appreciate your patience as you wait along the curb for your child to arrive safely at your car. Please continue to discuss traffic safety with your child at home. Remind your child to use the crosswalks and to stay on the sidewalks when waiting.

After School Traffic Notice
Hello Parents,
We have had numerous complaints from our community regarding the safety of our students when they are being picked up on Kuaoa Street and Lehiwa Drive. Because vehicles are either double or illegally parked on the main road, it is making it difficult for regular traffic to pass. Students are also seen going in and out of traffic trying to get to their designated vehicle creating an unsafe situation. The Honolulu Police Department will be monitoring these areas to ensure that our streets surrounding our campus are safe for our students. In the process they have informed us that they will be giving citations to illegally parked cars. Please help us keep our students safe by parking in legally parked areas and making sure that your children are arriving to their designated vehicle in a safe manner.

MS4 Public Awareness
Aloha Parents and Students,
This Public Service Announcement is in conjunction with the Department of Education's MS4 (Small Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) requirement. We ask that everyone practice safe environmental practices at home to protect our streams and drainage channels that lead to the ocean.
How can you help at home? We stress the following activities:
1. Use commercial car washes that treat or recycle wastewater.
2. Use enough of a cleaning product to get the job done; use low phosphate or phosphate-free detergents if possible.
3. Use plain water when washing your car on a city street or wash your car on a grassy area.
4. Use a spray gun with flow restriction or a bucket and sponge to reduce runoff and save water.

Safety Updates
Thank you to all of our families for the instant response to address our safety message. Mililani 'Ike Elementary continues to work with the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) in investigating the situations involving the two vehicles who were taking pictures on our campus. We submitted a request to HPD asking for more surveillance around our school as a precaution.
Our teachers are leading discussions with the students in the classrooms on general safety precautions and what to do when approached by strangers. Please continue to speak to your child at home. Safety is an ongoing area where children require reminders and instruction.
We are also looking to create a parent watch group. It would constitute parents volunteering to monitor the front and back drop off/pick up areas of our campus in the morning (7:30am - 8:00am) and after school (2:00pm - 2:30pm). If you are interested in volunteering your time, please contact Mrs. Janel Uemori at 626-0940 extension 236.
Thank you again for your continued partnership in your child's education!

Keep Off Slopes and Hills

At our beautiful campus we have many hills and slopes that are on the edge of the Mililani 'Ike property. Recently there have been many students that have been playing on the hills and running down them as well. We do not want anyone to get hurt so please remind your children to keep off the hills to ensure that all students are safe on our school campus.

Parking Stalls
We have noticed that some parents have been parking their cars in the vacant area near the exit of our parking lot. This area was previously occupied by our recycling bin. When parents park in this area, children have been witnessed crossing on-coming traffic when traveling from their car to school grounds. This poses a risk to our students' safety and well-being. In addition, some vehicles that have been parking there are impeding traffic because their vehicles are too large to fit in the open area. To rectify the safety concerns related to this issue, this area will now be turned into parallel parking stalls for staff use only. For safety of all students, please do not use these stalls.

Requesting Vigilance
In the last week, two reports of suspicious activity have been reported at Mililani 'Ike. Middle aged men were seen taking pictures of our school's campus. When approached, the driver of the car sped off in both situations. Police reports were filed and they are assisting in following up in both cases.
Please speak to your children about safety. Remind them not to talk to or approach any strangers. If an unknown person tries to speak or come up to them while at school, they should run away and seek assistance from school personnel. If they are walking off campus, yell for help and get to a safe, crowded location.
If you see any suspicious activity at our school, please call 911 and notify the office. Working together we will ensure the safety of all students and staff of Mililani 'Ike Elementary.

Leave Kendamas at Home
Please remind your children that toys are a contraband at school. We noticed students are bringing the kendama toy to school. For the safety of all students, please keep these toys at home. The kendama is a wooden toy with a string connecting a wooden ball. The students try to get the ball into the cup or point. Swinging the wooden ball is a safety concern and the kendama toy is a distraction in school. Students will be reminded to leave all toys at home. Any contraband item will be confiscated and parents will be notified to pick up the item.

Farrell's restaurant is providing Mililani 'Ike with a new incentive to read at home. Your child will be given an incentive where if they read 5 books in one month they can earn a free sundae at Farrell's restaurant located in Pearlridge Shopping Center. Your child will be coming home with a reading slip to document what books they have read. Once your child has finished and documented their books for the month, your child needs to get your signature and the signature of their teacher to verify that they read the listed books. Welcome to SY 213-2014
Welcome Back to school! We hope you had a enjoyable and restful summer vacation. I am Lynne Ajifu, Mililani 'Ike's Principal. I was fortunate to begin my administrator career at Mililani 'Ike Elementary School in 2008 as a Vice Principal. Last year I was given the opportunity to be the acting principal of Solomon Elementary School located on Schofield Barracks. I've learned a lot and am excited to be back at Mililani 'Ike Elementary School. Working together, we'll have a great school year!
All of the teachers have worked hard in preparing for another successful school year. We will be focusing on utilizing technology into curriculuar areas, training students to utilize self assessment practices, and continuing to develop our partnership you, our families. Please communicate with your child's teacher and participate in educational activities. Together, we'll ensure your child's progress.
