Pedestrian Safety Week
Dear Mililani ‘Ike families,
We will be having a Pedestrian Safety Week February 19 to February 21.
The fifth grade Student Council Members decided that pedestrian safety is an important issue because we keep hearing about pedestrian accidents on the news. We researched the problem and found out that people have been jaywalking, walking in bike lanes, not following the pedestrian laws, and aren’t looking both ways while crossing the street. Pedestrian accidents is the second leading cause of death for children behind drowning. There is not one clear cause for these accidents but we want to help.
We want you to encourage your family to discuss what you can do to be safe as pedestrians. Also, during the Pedestrian Safety Week, we will be encouraging distraction free driving to help keep pedestrians safe. Two Driver’s Pledges are attached to this flyer. Please encourage drivers you know to take the pledge and return them to your classroom by Friday, February 21. We will be posting the pledges on D-building and counting how many we receive. The more pledge forms we receive the safer our roads will be! More pledge forms will be available at the Office.
These are the activities we are having this week:
- Tuesday, Feb 19- Pedestrian safety presentation by the 5th grade Student Council Members at lunch.
- Wednesday, Feb 20- Banner signing before school and recess. Sign our banner to support Pedestrian Safety!
- Thursday, Feb 21- Pedestrian Safety Assembly and Pledge. Speakers from the Hawaii Department of Transportation will be doing a presentation and leading us in a Pedestrian Safety Pledge.
- Friday, Feb 22-The final count of pledges received will be announced.
Thank you for making Mililani a safer place.
Sincerely,
Mililani ‘Ike Elementary Fifth Grade Student Council Members
