Bullying

Dear Parents,
It's important for families and schools to work together to put an end to bullying.  Please review this "Bullying" fact sheet with your child.  Together, we can make a difference!

Bullying...what is it?
*when a person or group harasses, intimidates, hurts or embarrasses another person on purpose
*happens more than once and has the potential to continue if it is not addressed
*comes in different forms
*involves an imbalance in power

Forms of bullying include...
*Physical - hitting, tripping, pushing, kicking, spitting, destroying personal property
*Social/emotional - gossiping, spreading rumors, making threats, inappropriate comments (sexual, ethnic/racial slurs), teasing, blackmail, purposeful exclusion
*Cyber - the use of technology to intimidate, harass or embarrass - includes things such as emails, text, IM, negative posts on social media

Bullying is not...
* a single, isolated incident
*a mutual conflict - which involves a disagreement, but not an imbalance of power
*students choosing not to be friends - all students have the right to choose their own friends, however, if they choose not to be friends, they still need to be respectful to one another

What can students do if they are being bullied?
STOP - WALK - TALK
*Tell the bully to stop
*Walk away
*Tell someone - don't keep it a secret - talk to a trusted adult

Research shows, that prolonged bullying has long-term negative effects on both the victim and bully.
Let's put an end to bullying!

4th Grade Make up Picture Taking

Hello 4th grade Parents,                                                               October 21, 2014

We have a make up picture taking scheduled for this week Thursday, October 23rd.  Unfortunately there is a field trip scheduled on the same day for the entire 4th grade class.  Lifetouch was nice enough to accommodate the 4th graders by providing another make up picture day so that the 4th grade students do not have to rush to take their pictures and catch the bus.  The make up session is being scheduled and we will let you know as soon as it is set.  If you have any questions please give me a call at 626-2980.

Sincerely,

Ian Tanita

Updated Contact Information Needed

Hello 'Ike Families,

As we are in the middle of hurricane season it is important that the school has your most current contact information.  Mililani 'Ike uses a school messenger where calls are made by an automated system to inform parents of emergencies, upcoming events or any other pertinent information.  Our reports show that many of our families are not receiving these calls because their phone numbers listed are not operational.

Please inform the school by calling the front office at 626-2980 if you have changed your phone number, address, etc. so that we can ensure that you have all updated news and announcements.

Thank you,

Ian Tanita

Volunteers Needed

VOLUNTEERS VONLUNTEERS VOLUNTEERS!!!

Aloha from your Mililani Ike PTO,

This is a reminder that pick up for our fall fundraiser is this coming Saturday, October 18th from 9am to 12 noon. Please remember to bring your tickets for pick up to ensure that you get all the correct products.

We had a really great response to the fundraiser and will have over 6,000 products to hand out to our community. We are asking that anyone who can come out to support our school this Saturday and help with distribution contact Diane, our PTO volunteer coordinator, at volunteer@mililaniikepto.org, or just come on out and join us if you are available between 8am and 12 noon. The more volunteers we have the smoother the day will run.

Thank you all for your great fundraising efforts, generous donations and school support.

MAHALO!

Stranger Danger

Dear Parents and Guardians,

For more than a week, school children across Oahu have reported incidents of being approached by strangers while walking to and from school.

the safety of your child is of the utmost importance to us.  We are sending this letter to you as a precaution, and to encourage you to speak to your child regarding measures to stay safe, specifically about "stranger danger."

As an added precaution, please reinforce with your child the following safety measures:

  • Stay away from strangers, do not talk to or take anything from them.
  • Don't go anywhere with someone you don't know.  Never accept a ride from a stranger.
  • Stay more than an arm's reach from strangers.  If a stranger approaches you, seek help immediately from a trusted adult.
  • Use the buddy system; avoid walking anywhere alone.
  • If a stranger grabs you, do whatever it takes to stop the stranger, yell for help.
  • Report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult.
  • Be alert of your surroundings and let others know where you will be and what time you will be back.
We appreciate your help as we work together to keep all of our students safe.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call me at (808) 626-2980.

Thank you,

Lynne Ajifu
