Jump Rope for Heart

The trade winds blew the clouds away and the sun began to shine today.  Yippeee!  We were able to have our Annual Jump Rope for Heart Celebration today.  Click on this link to see pictures of today's event.  Thank you to all of our families who supported the American Heart Association and to everyone who made this a successful event.  The teachers, staff, and children shared many happy memories today.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Next Week

Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) next week (April 23 - 27).  Here are some helpful suggestions so students can do their best on the assessments:

Before testing:
Parents
*Please avoid scheduling appointments during the testing week.  Students tend to do better when they test with their class.
*Be in school on time.  Students cannot enter the classroom if testing has already started.
Students -
*Be well rested - get enough sleep the night before.
*Prepare your things the day before so you're not rushed in the morning.
*Eat a good breakfast.

During testing:
*Relax - don't stress.  Just try your best.
*Don't rush - take your time.  You will not get extra points for finishing before everyone else.
*Read the directions carefully.  For example - the directions may say to list two pieces of text evidence to support your answer.  If you list only one, you will get only partial credit.
*Be sure to check your answers before you submit.

Pedestrian Safety Video

Hi Mililani 'Ike Parents,

Our students will be watching a pedestrian safety video during lunch today to remind them to practice safety first when crossing our sidewalks and walking in our community.  Below is the link from our Campus Police Officers (CPOs) who created this informational video:

Traffic Safety Request

Dear Mililani ‘Ike Families,

I am writing this letter asking for your support in keeping our students safe.  We received a report from a parent that our student was hit by a car while riding her bicycle to school.  Fortunately, the student was wearing a helmet and was not severely injured.

This is a HUGE reminder for all adults to implement safety procedures while driving and for us to remind our students of the importance of road safety.  As drivers, please drive slowly and abide all traffic laws around our school and in the neighborhood.  We will be reviewing pedestrian safety procedures with all of our students.  Students need to be aware of traffic and their surrounding while crossing the street either on foot or on a bicycle.  A video will be shared with the students and posted onto our school’s blog.  Please review the safety procedures at home.

We will continuing to work with Wahiawa Community Policing Team and ask for their support in monitoring the vehicle traffic and pedestrians around our school.  Please help us to spread the word to keep our students safe as they walk or ride their bicycles to school, from school, and around our neighborhood.

Your continued support, implementation of safe driving practices, and reminders to our students is much appreciated.  Together we will keep all students safe while enjoying their walk or ride to school.

Sincerely,
Lynne Ajifu
Principal
